On 12 April, McLaren announced that Alonso was to miss the Monaco Grand Prix and compete for Andretti Autosport at the Indianapolis 500, and later confirmed the substitute to be Button.Afterwards, Wehrlein was declared fit enough to compete in Bahrain. Despite some certainty that Wehrlein would compete in China, Giovinazzi again took his seat for the race.
